Front Porch Portraits | 2013
I have a little secret. Every week of 2013, I took my kids to the front porch of our house - or wherever we were - and asked them for a picture. The result is almost 52 images of my kids over the course of an entire year. The amount that these images show their personalities is astounding. I am in love with more than a few. Pretty quickly on in the project, I realized that if I was going to make this work, I had to be flexible. The boys could wear whatever they wanted, bring with them whatever was important to them that minute, and there were no rules. If they didn't want to be in the picture that was fine, but they both obliged me every week.
I also realized that I needed to be flexible from a photographic perspective. I used almost every camera I've owned this year. Everything from full-frame digital, 35mm and medium format film, and even my iPhone. And it turns out, the camera didn't matter - just the act of going to the front porch and stopping for a few frames was what was important. And the results were so worthwhile.
I'm including my favorites below, but at the end of this post I've put together a slideshow of all the images. If you're so inclined, I'd love for you to take a look.
